Along the banks of the Vltava River, Prague has unveiled a stunning transformation of its subterranean spaces. These once-forgotten vaults, embedded in the city’s historic embankments, have been reborn as dynamic venues for art, food, and social gatherings. This ambitious project not only enhances the riverside experience but also honors the area’s industrial past while embracing modern urban vitality.

The Origins of the Riverfront Vaults

The vaults trace their roots to the 19th century when Prague’s embankments were fortified against frequent floods. Constructed primarily between 1841 and 1910, these massive retaining walls along Rašín, Hořejší, and Dvořák embankments served practical purposes for river commerce. Hollowed-out chambers within the walls functioned as ice storage for preserving goods transported by ships, as well as general warehouses for cargo.

Before the revitalization, these arched doorways—often sealed or hidden—hinted at mysterious underground realms. Post-2002 floods, the riverfront devolved into a neglected zone dominated by parked cars, far from its potential as a public hub. The Czech government’s designation of these spaces as ‘dungeons’ underscores their utilitarian history, yet they held untapped promise.

A Decade-Long Revitalization Effort

In 2009, the City of Prague launched one of its most significant public space investments since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, allocating approximately €6.5 million (or $7.6 million) to rejuvenate a 2.5- to 4-kilometer stretch of the Vltava riverbank known as Náplavka. Led by architect Petr Janda of Brainwork Studio, the project unfolded in phases, with the first phase focusing on 20 vaults completed around 2019-2021.

The initiative aimed to pivot the city ‘face towards the river,’ converting a desolate area into Prague’s liveliest waterfront promenade. By merging historic structures with contemporary design, it fosters multi-layered social interactions—from casual strolls to cultural events.

Architectural Innovation in the Vaults

Petr Janda’s design philosophy employs an ‘acupuncture strategy,’ making minimal interventions that symbiotically blend with the existing embankment architecture. Rather than traditional interiors, the vaults extend outward, maximizing river contact through innovative openings.

  • Rašín Embankment (6 vaults): Feature massive elliptical pivoting windows—among the world’s largest at 5.5 meters in diameter and 2.5 tonnes each. These motorized glass doors rotate diagonally, floodlight at night, and evoke ‘Hobbit doors’ with their curved allure. Stepped stone cladding conceals utilities like ventilation and flood barriers.
  • Hořejší Embankment (14 vaults): Boast sculptural blackened steel entrances that curve to link interiors seamlessly with the promenade. Titanium-coated stainless steel interiors reflect river undulations, paired with sandblasted concrete walls and cast floors for a raw, industrial aesthetic.

These elements ensure durability against floods while creating immersive, light-filled spaces that draw visitors inward.

New Life in the Vaults: Venues and Functions

The revitalized vaults now pulse with diverse activities, turning the riverfront into a cultural nexus:

Impact on Prague’s Urban Landscape

This project has dramatically shifted Náplavka from a post-flood wasteland to a vibrant destination. Summer evenings buzz with events, markets, and performances, attracting locals and tourists alike. The design promotes inclusivity, with accessible promenades and flood-resilient features ensuring year-round usability.

Economically, it boosts local businesses while culturally enriching the city. Janda emphasizes how these spaces alter perceptions, fostering a ‘multi-layered social life’ oriented toward the Vltava.

Future Phases and River Traditions Revival

Phase one complete, subsequent stages include reviving Prague’s historic river spas with floating pools and saunas. The full 4-km revitalization will further integrate green spaces, bike paths, and event areas, solidifying Náplavka as a model for urban renewal.

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon for sunset views or evenings when vaults illuminate.
  • Access: Trams to Rašínovo nábřeží or walk from Karlovo náměstí.
  • What to Do: Graffiti tours, craft beer tastings, art exhibits.
  • Flood Safety: Vaults are elevated and protected; check weather apps.
